“Web browsing on the iPhone 3G really blew me away. At last, it’s feasible to pull up the New York Times home page when you’re not in Wi-Fi range. That said, when you are using Wi-Fi, the difference can still be dramatic.”
“Over the course of its contract it won’t be a cheap handset, no matter what Apple and AT&T (or any of the other carriers) say, but I can safely say that the sheer joy of usability will see you soon forget whatever monthly bill you’ve signed yourself up for.”
“What’s missing from the new iPhone? Those who use phone cameras will be disappointed at the lack of video recording which is common on most high-end phones and smartphones to varying degrees of success. Video playback of saved files, though, is flawless.”
“The iPhone 3G improves on the original iPhone’s audio quality, offers access to a faster data network, and sports built-in GPS functionality. You’ll also be getting in on the ground floor of the exciting new world of third-party software written for the iPhone. And business users will appreciate the iPhone’s new Exchange syncing features.”
“Despite the downbeat tune it is a thumbs up from us, but if you’ve got an old iPhone and aren’t fussed about 3G or GPS, the iPhone 2.0 software update will mean the “buzz” phone of the moment is all but virtually in your pocket already.”
“The iPhone 3G is still hampered by a few minor problems that may or may not annoy you, such as the inability to send MMS, but overall we found it a joy to use. You don’t immediately think, “Isn’t it a shame it doesn’t do that?” because what it does do well is so far in advance of other phones you almost forget its downsides.”

ArsTechnica indicates the increase in Apple iPhone 3G camera pixels may be worse, not better -
“Apple managed to strike a fairly reasonable balance here: the iPhone takes pictures that are within the sharpness range expected from a 2 megapixel camera, while the aperture is a respectable f/2.8. If Apple were to use a higher resolution image sensor with the same lens, the pictures wouldn’t be any sharper—and 2MP sharpness in a 5MP camera is just not acceptable. The other option would be to reduce the size of the lens opening, but that way, the amount of light that reaches the sensor is reduced and the iPhone would have an even harder time taking decent photos under dim lighting.”

“Our early First Look wasn’t comprehensive enough to test Mr Jobs’s claims for extended battery life, or to see how much GPS would eat into that. But we’re happy to recommend it on the basis of its remarkable predecessor and the addition of HSDPA data transfer at speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. Especially since O2’s 3G network is more advanced than its EDGE coverage.”

“Navigating with Google Maps is the least interesting application for GPS on the Apple iPhone 3G. We’re most excited to see what third-party developers come up with. Tom Tom has already announced support, so surely there will be excellent navigation options for the iPhone. But navigation is only the tip of the iceberg for GPS, which is going to be the killer app for the next Apple iPhone.”

“It looks like they took an amazing device and made it significantly better. If the battery life is as good as they claim, we think this will steamroll the competition in the enterprise space. “I also played Super Monkey Ball during my 15 minutes with the iPhone. I didn’t like how to control the game, I had to set the screen to viewing angles that would compromise my view of the screen. But I did catch on how to play within a few seconds.”

“Fundamentally, this new iPhone feels very much like the old iPhone. It’s apparently lighter than the old one by a minuscule amount, but in my hand it didn’t feel any different from the current iPhone. The biggest cosmetic changes are on the back panel, which is now shiny plastic instead of metal. The back panel is curvier than the one on the current iPhone, and the recessed headphone jack has been replaced with one which lies flush with the iPhone’s body, meaning the days of iPhone headphone adapters are gone forever.”

“Though I didn’t have a gen one iPhone to compare it to, the iPhone 3G felt lighter and softer in my hand. I was immediately attracted to the white 16GB (apparently because it is more feminine). The white back is glossy and smooth and has a rounded back to it.”

“If you’re an iPhone fence-sitter, now’s the time. The addition of 3G and GPS, the affordable price tag and extra features from the iPhone 2.0 software update make the iPhone 3G a worthy prospect. Unlike the previous iPhone, which we liked and recommended with reservations, we’re much happier with what this new handset has to offer. iPhone 3G isn’t perfect, but there’s a lot to like here and we approach the device with much anticipation. “The third sensor on Apple’s iPhone 3G has been revealed, and it seems that it’s nothing more than an additional proximity sensor.”

InfoSyncWorld shows you 3 Apple iPhone 3G predictions that provide reasons to snag Apple’s new offering -
“Although the Apple iPhone 3G may look like the original with a couple of tweaks, the hardware hidden behind the black or white casing has received a total makeover. As always, Apple is reluctant to provide technical information for a number of reasons, but among the key upgrades there should be a new motherboard and a new GPS chip.”

PopSci indicates the Apple iPhone 3G is being positioned as a gaming station -
“Apple is pushing their iPhone App Store hard, and it looks like games may be the number one new seller.”

Phanfare’s iPhone camera application lets you store photos on the Net with a single click.

“The Phanfare iPhone app gets the computer out of the uploading loop and makes digital photography fun and convenient—all with a single click.” Phanfare’s iPhone app is fully integrated with the Phanfare photo and video sharing service, offering downloadable Mac and PC organizers, state of the art web management and unlimited archival storage. Phanfare users can view their photos and videos on Phanfare’s ad-free online albums and full-screen slideshows, on other websites, such as Facebook, and on their home computer using the Phanfare screensaver or even on their living room tv, using the Phanfare media server. Phanfare also provides a fully compatible iPhone viewing experience that allows browsing photos from any iPhone.

Announcement

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone 3G at the worldwide developers conference in San Francisco, the new model is both thinner and cheaper than the first version.

“Twice as fast, half the price” is Apple’s claim for the just-launched 3G version of the iPhone.

The major upgrade for the Apple iPhone 3G is the new 3G networking, as the phone gets a boost from slower EDGE connections to faster HSDPA. Along with the new speed improvement Apple’s new offering needed an improved battery, and Apple is promising the phone will still deliver five hours of talk time in 3G networks, and 10 hours using 2G connections, which is actually pretty impressive.

The Apple iPhone 3G includes the new App Store, providing iPhone users with native applications in a variety of categories including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi.

Availability will be in more than 70 countries later this year, beginning with customer in 22 countries — Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US - on July 11.

In the US the iPhone 3G will be available on July 11 for a retail price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail stores and requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers.

“The GPS performance, call quality, and loud speaker are major pluses. But we’re disappointed in the sluggish performance and buggy software, and the one thing that most BlackBerry users have grown accustomed to—a superior keyboard—is frustrating to use on the Storm.”
“I have to say that while the Diamond looks really nice, it needs a processor boost and a bit more RAM to speed things up so that it can keep up with me.”
“It is a nice phone, no doubt, but with a slightly better availability of TouchFLO and an improved digital camera, it could have been a top model.”
“The Touch Diamond packs in a lot of features and is a good effort by HTC to rival the iPhone’s touchscreen usability while retaining the power and extensibility of Windows Mobile. But despite the hype, the Diamond is distinctly half-baked.”
“The messaging system suffers from extreme slowness as well – in theory you can swipe a finger across the screen to see the next message but in practice this only worked rarely, and the rest of the time either didn’t work or registered as a press, which took us to the current message.”

“The Touch Diamond may not be perfect, but it’s small, light, well equipped and comes with a smooth, clever and reliable 3D user interface that looks great and keeps you well away from Windows Mobile. The screen and web browser are both particularly fine. Our biggest concern is the lack of a memory card slot which on a high-end smartphone in this day and age is tough to explain or justify.”

“The HTC Touch Diamond offers much in the way of sex appeal and flash, and it’s certainly got a formidable feature set. However, we hope HTC resolves some of the performance issues we experienced before the smartphone is released in the States.”

“HTC is asking a premium for this unlocked phone—$779 is a lot of money given that you could buy nearly four iPhone 3Gs for the same price. However, in return, you’re getting a unique and fairly versatile device that can be used the world over for business as well as personal use. The Diamond’s small size and much improved TouchFLO 3D technology make it convenient to use with one hand, which will undoubtedly appeal to unrepentant multitaskers. Its design will attract those who want a good-looking touchscreen smart phone not made by Apple.”

“We had high hopes that HTC might have cracked a Windows Mobile touchscreen phone that could compete with the iPhone user experience. It hasn’t. We’re genuinely disappointed that while the Touch Diamond might look great and have more features than a James Bond gadget, it doesn’t come together smoothly. “HTC has created a device that is a the best iPhone challenger we’ve seen to date and offers those not keen to switch to Apple or O2 the chance to get touchy feely with their phone. Compared to the Samsung i900 this is light years ahead, compared to the BlackBerry Curve, users will miss the QWERTY keyboard and while the touchscreen keyboard does go someway to replacing this it’s just not the same experience. However BlackBerry Pearl users should be fine.”

“Many readers have emailed us to ask how the HTC Touch Diamond compared to the iPhone 3G. We could go on and on about that, but the main difference is this–you can buy the Diamond now, and HTC doesn’t require you to fulfill its terms to own one. The little improvements HTC has made to the Diamond make it a great product compared to all the other keypad-less Windows Mobile PDA-phones out there now.”

“We are overall very impressed with HTC’s latest super-phone. TouchFLO 3D is an amazing overlay that proves to be much more than eye candy. Opera Mobile is the best mobile web experience we’ve encountered yet. It’s a very powerful device for both the business user and general consumer alike, and staying fully connected and entertained on the go has never been easier. The size and weight couldn’t be more perfect. HTC set out to raise the bar and they undoubtedly have.”

“The HTC Touch Diamond is the most consumer-friendly Windows Mobile smartphone yet. It’s both powerful and easy to use. People looking to step up from a regular phone to a much more feature-rich one should seriously consider this device.

HTC has clearly put many hours of thought into how to make a smartphone more intuitive, and this device shows it.

I predict big things for this product, with sales in the millions.”

“But this much I can say: the Touch Diamond is the coolest Windows Mobile Professional device I have used, bar none. I am very much looking forward to a North American version of the Diamond and its brother, the Touch Pro (AKA Raphael), with its large QWERTY keyboard. HTC is really on to something here, to be sure, and regardless of the problems that I experienced, I expect these TouchFLO 3D devices to sell by the millions.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“I purchased the European version of the Diamond for use in the US on ATT. I have not had any problems so far with voice service. Data service is slower than I had on my Blackjack, but I knew that would happen.”

Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“The screen is too small. I would be happy to carry a slightly bigger phone to get another 1/2 inch larger screen. Anyone who’s shortsighted or has big thumbs will have problems using many applications and commands on the small screen.”

Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“Cost was a big factor in choosing this phone over the iPhone which is ridiculously expensive in Canada with limited carriers. Will I stay with it? I will give it two weeks to improve the battery life - if it doesn’t improve I will turn it back in on my 30 day DOA clause.”

Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“All-in-all it’s a good phone, well worth its price. However, if you’re looking to consolidate your other devices (phone, music player, GPS navigator, etc.) into this one device, then consider investing in a larger capacity battery, carry around an extra battery, or try a car-kit for charging when necessary.”

Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“People complaining about the phone being slow should install the latest ROM (or one from xda developers). It will also improve battery life.”

“The Samsung Instinct is no iPhone, nor is it an iPhone killer. It is, however, an amazingly feature packed touch based phone with a reasonable user interface.”
“This is not a true smartphone like the iPhone or AT&T Tilt, and it’s really not ideal for business users because of the lack of instantaneous email sync (a la Blackberry) and somewhat iffy MS Exchange support. We’re also not crazy about the live TV and much prefer the service on LG’s Voyager.”
“Samsung did a solid job on the Instinct; you have to admire the extensive feature list you get for the price. But with iPhone prices about to tumble even as Apple’s hardware improves, the Instinct doesn’t shape up as an iPhone killer.”

“I found its email system and Web browser to be less sophisticated than the iPhone’s or the BlackBerry’s. I also thought the phone’s onscreen keyboard was harder to use than Apple’s. It would flip unpredictably from landscape to portrait mode. The Instinct does allow handwriting recognition as an alternative, something the iPhone doesn’t.

If you’re a devoted Sprint customer, or want to avoid AT&T, the Instinct is an OK choice. But it’s no iPhone.”

“Pros: Great call quality. Excellent Web browser, with cool browsing features. Great navigation, well-integrated with the rest of the phone’s features.
Cons: Not as responsive as it should be. No IM client. Lacks a load of onboard memory. No tethered modem support.”

“The last thing I want to mention is that the phone has an all-you-can-eat service price of $99 per month that includes EVERYTHING. That is to say, everything but song downloads and some very peripheral video-on-demand options. Most streaming vid and music is included, all data for e-mail, all messaging including video mail, unlimited use of the GPS navigation, plus unlimited talk time. I believe that’s a pretty good price when you consider all of the features. The key with a plan like that is to have a phone where those features can be used. That’s what the Samsung Instinct is, to me—the best feature phone option for people who don’t mind playing in Sprint’s walled garden of services, but don’t want to feel like a chump. I’ve been playing with it nonstop for days now, and it continues to impress me. And while I’m no iPhone fanboy, I’m not easily impressed.”

“The Samsung Instinct is taking a run straight at the iPhone, but it’s not quite an iPhone. It offers some features the iPhone doesn’t, and it makes better phone calls than the original iPhone, but it doesn’t quite match the iPhone’s stellar design or near-perfect ease-of-use. Sprint users who want to focus on PIM and e-mail should go with the Palm Centro or Blackberry Curve. If excellent voice quality is what you’re after, pick up the Sanyo Pro 200 or Motorola V9m. But if you want a fun, high-end media phone, the Instinct stands alone; prettily and proudly.”

“I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second.”
“It might lack the drool-inducing instant allure of the iPhone 3G, but it counters that both with usable, thought-out abilities today and real promise for tomorrow. Android and the G1 are no iPhone-killer, but they’re certainly a game-changer.”
“Overall the Samsung Glyde is a solid offering from Verizon. I kept wishing for dedicated buttons underneath the screen so that I wouldn’t have to hit the screen as often to navigate menus inside of applications, though. I also found a bunch of OS quirks involving tactile feedback being received but where the screen didn’t actually change.”
“The Verizon Glyde isn’t a bad cellphone, but it’s outshone by its rivals. If it had been released back in January at the same time as the F700v appeared, it would have stolen the march on Sprint’s Instinct and all the other touchscreen handsets. However, users are spoilt for choice at the moment, and we would likely recommend other devices before Verizon’s Glyde.”

“The phone itself is a nice size and weight, making it very pocket friendly. It also adds in most of the features that have become standard for an upper-end feature phone. The solid camera and camera UI, music player, and browser make the Glyde a perfect way to distract oneself.

Our review unit did, however, suffer from low signal strength and only so-so call quality. You might want to check for yourself to see how it performs in your area.”

“Overall, I’m happy with the Glyde and I’m glad Samsung decided to bring it here to the States. It’s definitely going to be one of Verizon’s more popular devices. It’s small and light weight at 4.1 ounces and measures in at 4.1 x 2.0 x 0.7-inches. Other than the minor touchscreen glitches here and there, I didn’t run into anything else that was remotely irritating and most of you know I’ll rip anything apart given the chance.”

“The Glyde seems like a compelling touchscreen messaging phone with fun messaging capabilities, and we like the keyboard, but it has too many drawbacks to recommend. The interface is bland and needlessly difficult to customize, and the touchscreen doesn’t always act on each finger press. We say either spend the $50 to get the V CAST Mobile TV–sporting Voyager or—if you can do without a touchscreen—pick up the $129 LG enV2.”

“Overall I still like the Samsung Glyde, even with its somewhat numerous faults. It is a good looking device, has a interesting user interface (even if it is imperfect), and has a good set of specs for a phone of its size. I give it a “Recommended” rating, with some reservations. I would suggest that any would-be buyers spend a bit of time with the phone at the local Verizon Wireless store before handing over the required coin to Verizon’s sales people.”

“For basic talking, texting, and Web surfing, the Samsung Glyde does a good job. While I still recommend the LG enV2 (which has similar features, sans the touch screen, for only $129.99 with contract) to most people, the Glyde will work for you if you prefer its slider-style keyboard layout.”

“The good: The LG Vu is a super sexy touch-screen phone with a 3-inch display and haptic feedback. Features include AT&T Mobile TV, HSDPA speeds, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a full HTML browser, and quad-band support.

The bad: The LG Vu’s camera lacks flash, and there’s a learning curve involved with the touch screen. Streaming video was a little choppy as well.”

“The Good: Simulcast and time-shifted programming on any device with a 3-inch screen and no lag time will have anyone slipping into sloth mode wherever they are. It’s the ultimate time waster.

The Bad: Unless you’re in an area with strong 3G coverage the phone is pretty useless for watching TV. It may be lightweight, but it feels chintzy and unless you have the fingers of a 5-year-old child, the touchscreen will disappoint regardless of the haptic feedback. Did I mention the $299 price tag? Let’s hope the rumors about a $199 3G iPhone are true regardless of the fact that it will be sans Mobile TV service.”

“The LG Vu isn’t quite as slick as the iPhone. But it’s close. Ultimately, it’s the lack of PC syncing and the somewhat lower-quality Internet options that cause me to recommend Apple’s phone over LG’s. The iPhone successfully takes the place of a PDA and an iPod because it serves as an extension of the media and personal information you keep on your PC, and browsing with Safari is truly gorgeous. The Vu doesn’t quite measure up there, although it’s less expensive and packs in features like 3G, instant messaging, and stereo Bluetooth, which are missing from the iPhone.”

MobileTechReview reviews the LG Vu (CU920) and writes -
“We like the Vu quite a lot. It’s small, light and attractive with that chic look. Yes, it’s plastic and pales in comparison to the iPhone’s modern skyscraper glass and metal shtick, but when compared to mere mortal phones, it’s good stuff. The touch screen is large, lovely and perfect for TV. Better yet, it responds well and the haptic feedback makes it more natural than interacting with lifeless glass. It’s not quite as good as the iPhone’s (other than the quibble with the iPhone’s lack of tactile feedback), but then nothing is. The Vu’s mobile TV experience is excellent (assuming you’re in a covered area), the camera is good and call is very good. Oh, and we really like the HTML browser.”

LapTopMag reviews the LG Vu (CU920) and writes -
“If the LG Vu’s goal was to deliver a touchscreen phone and silky-smooth Mobile TV to those who can’t afford (or don’t want to pay for) the iPhone, we say: mission accomplished. The Vu is also a better phone than the iPhone, although it lacks niceties such as visual voicemail. If you don’t need a full Web surfing experience on the go and don’t mind putting up with a few other quirks, this is a good choice.”

Looks like Brando has a new hefty 6x telephoto lens for the iPhone 3G.

Priced at under $20 it might be worth packing around since the pulling power of 6x can come in really handy.

“BlackBerries have always excelled at mobile email, but have been lackluster in other areas. Still, RIM has been making strides to remedy this in recent years, and the BlackBerry Bold is a strong step in this direction.

This smartphone will debut later this summer. At this point, the only wireless carrier that has committed to offering it is AT&T, but I expect it to be widely available by this fall.”

“The display is AWESOME. I knew it would be an improved display, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as bright and crisp as it is. The 480 by 320 HVDA Color LCD delivers. For the 88xx, Curve and Pearl users reading this who shunned the notion of upgrading to the 9000 when it comes out, let me just say this display alone will make you want to reconsider.”
