Reviewers Conclusions & Verdicts – (updated 25 June’09)

MacWorld
“In the end, top-down versus bottom-up are really just two different ways of addressing the same problem. Which one you, as a user, will prefer depends largely on what you want to get out of your device. As a device that does many tasks, there’s a lot to like about the G1, even if it’s not all there yet. Its user-interface quirks may bother some people more than others, who will be willing to overlook the annoyances because of the sheer amount of functionality that the G1 sports.”

DevHardware
“As a first generation device, it is pretty well-rounded, with not a lot of flaws. I am excited to see what is in Android’s future. It looks very promising, and has already leaped ahead of Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.”

Computer Active
“It’s competitively priced against the iPhone, and that includes more minutes and the same unlimited internet access. Our only real problem with the G1 was having to flip the keyboard out every time we wanted to type, and that is admittedly a matter of personal preference.”

CrunchGear
“If you’ve been waiting for Android then I suggest you keep waiting. The overall OS seems to be held together by duct tape and needs a lot of work.”

Los Angeles Times
“The G1 obviously integrates the best of Google very well — and it should. Search is part of just about everything the device offers. It’s on the home screen, it’s in the music player, it’s in the maps. It’s quite impressive.”

PC Magazine
“According to Google, stereo Bluetooth support is on the way in the form of a firmware update. There’s already a version 0.1 free video player available in the App Market, the company’s answer to Apple’s App Store.”

Walt Mossberg
“I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second.”

Android Community
“It might lack the drool-inducing instant allure of the iPhone 3G, but it counters that both with usable, thought-out abilities today and real promise for tomorrow. Android and the G1 are no iPhone-killer, but they’re certainly a game-changer.”

TimesOnline
“The G1 cannot compete with Apple’s sleek design. At first touch, the G1 looks and feels plastic and clunky by comparison.”

Gizmodo
“Despite all the UI quirks and bad design decisions, it’s still better than other smartphone OSes out there. It’s not perfect, but for people who like tinkering, its cons are outweighed by its pros such as Gmail and the Marketplace.”

CNET
“We were impressed by the snappy performance of the smartphone. The G1 was very responsive during our testing period, and we didn’t experience any system freezes or crashes.”

I am frustrated that the G1 has no facility to text using one hand only as with almost all other phones. Surely it would not be difficult to devise a program to text from the touch dialer screen

This phone stinks. The camera stinks, it has no zoom and the pics come out fuzzy. There is a constant click or other noise when I’m on the phone. It’s as if I hear everytime the signal switches towers or something. Very irritating. The battery stinks; it doesn’t last long and the phone has been randomly shutting off a lot lately. Having an Android marketplace where Joe Anyone can upload some program is dumb. I have 9 choices for a GPS. How am I to know which one will actually work? And, for the launch, they have a “News and Weather” section with absolutely no news sites. A friend of mine has the Sprint version of this phone and it’s great. A top news stories section where one can quickly glance at the top stories, a GPS that works and talks to you, a decent camera. I’ve been with T-Mobile for 6 years and LOVE them, but I’m seriously considering ditching them over this.

I just bought the G1 Phone it is horrible it dials people by it self it shuts down all the time and the battery olny last about 1 hr with out using the internet and on G2

I thought the HTC Magic was the G2. Touch HD is gonna be expensive.

Google should be aiming at the masses and design phones which would run smooth, have full features at lower end processors.

That means cheap price. And i feel android is capable of doing that.

MAN ! I wasted my $ on this. It just randomly shuts down and the battery only lasts for like an Hour. and when im textinq and i hav like 10 minutes goinq, it just shuts down. And why do you HAVE to have internet? That is just a waste of your money. Why else do people hav computers. People think that this is a good use because you can take the internet anywhere you want and stuff . But Hello ?! Thats what laptops are for ! And i Pay $80 a month for the bill. Which is around $900 a year for al the bills. I could buy a lapyop and still have money left. Whats so special about phones havinq internet. Saying good-bye to computers ? Yea well that\\\\’s not gonna happen. With my old phone, i had no problems and now THIS?! I thought it would be cool and stuff by the features but uh yea, they never said the side effects ?! If you have a business and want to get customers. Make your phones work ! But i hav encountered many problems with this phone. But its a pretty good phone. But the side effects is what makes it suck ! But now my anger is doown. :D oklets go to the good parts. I like the way its so different from other phones. The way its shaped and everythinq like that. But one thing that really does bug me is this. The G1 HAS to have internet for the Initial Set-up. I\\\\’m nearly at home ALL day and I have a computer.. Why do I need the internet if I have it right in front of me ? But all what T-Mobile is tryinq to do is make more $. BUt thats them and bribinq people will NOT work…..
